“Starry Night tells a simple but also complicated story. It is simple because it is just a story about two people meet and at last they separate. It is also complicated because it has the power that resonates with the readers. It can remind readers of their youth and youth is really hard to describe.”

How did you find this person and where could you see their work in person?
The drawer of the picture book, Jimmy Liao is very famous in China. Most of people in my generation have read his book when we were kids. Jimmy started drawing a long time ago and became famous when I was a child.
What is their work talking about or concerned with?
A girl that does not like to talk one day meet a boy who doesn’t like to talk either, they become friends. One day they escape from the city and come to the house that the girl’s grandfather used to live in a mountain. That night in the mountain, they saw the most beautiful starry sky. The book describes a group of children that have problems communicating with the world. Most of them are autistics and usually feel lonely. Starry Night tells a story about how that group of kids at first tried to escape from the society and gradually began to understand the meaning of their lives.
Find an artist
The artist that impressed me most is Janine Antoni. She creates work in performance art and sculpture. In the video, Janine showed us ropes that tied by different color of strings. In her assumption, the different color in the ropes represent different people, the connection of the ropes means the relationship between people. The ropes also show how the objects connect to the world. The ropes are like a life line, they tell the stories of the maker. I like her work because the ropes seems beautiful and meaningful. Human are social animal, relationship is one of the most important part in our lives. The strings are weak, but when they are tied into ropes, they become strong and hard to be tear apart. Also, as she said, the ropes are like a lifeline. In the different parts of our lives, we would meet and know different people and the different color of ropes can perfectly express this idea.
My story
First off, what is art to you?
For me,art is something that can influence people’s emotion and feelings or have strong resonances for the viewers, it can communicate with viewers without saying a word. Also, art is something that I can find almost everywhere in my daily life but a lot of times art is ignored. Art can be natural or artificial. It can be found in nature as gifts of god, like mountains trees and oceans. Meanwhile It can also be created by human as a tool to convey their thoughts and feelings to others. Art makes our world more colorful.
In your opinion, how do you know what good art is? What defines worthwhile art?
The definition of good art may various from people to people. In my opinion, a good art is something that can really touch viewer’s heart, no matter it conveys good feeling or sad feelings. I believe that a good art can talk, it can impressed viewers with its story inside and make viewers think.
Have you been to an art gallery or museum before? What was your experience?
Yes, when I was in China, I often visits the local museum which contains a lot of historical relics that was made thousands of years ago. When I saw those relics, I would imagine the life in that time, how people live, entertain and communicate with others. It was a pretty meaningful experience to learn the history and the art that is primitive. Also when I went to LA in 2011, I visited Getty Center. I was shocked by the elaborate design of the architecture and oil paintings displayed in the Getty Center. It was a very pleasant and unforgettable experience.
How do you feel art impacts your daily life? If you don’t think it does, explain.
I cannot imagine the life without art. The three things that I love most about this world are books, music and movies and they are all different patterns of representation of art. I listen to music every day, I watch 3 to 4 movies every week and I have read hundreds of books. I just bought an ukulele and now I spend couple of hours playing it everyday. I spend almost all of my spare time doing things that have some relevance with art. Art makes my life more meaningful. What I learn at school is knowledge that can help me find good jobs and have good salaries, but art teaches me how to view things around my life in a proper way and how to live a happy life.
This is my home town, Wuhan. It is a really large and beautiful city which has the most population in central China.
This is a picture of the living room of my home in Wuhan. I really like the design of my home,the color arrangement, the layout and the furniture.It was designed by a famous designer.My parents and I selected the furniture.
I started learning to write calligraphy since I was 5 years old and won a gold award in a national competition when I was nine. This is a picture of my calligraphy when I wrote it several months ago in a math class. The contents are the lyrics of a Chinese song.
I love music!! This is one of my favorite singers Jason Mraz. Music can cheer me up when I feel down and can make me calm down when I am anxious. I just started learning to play ukulele and I am pretty sure that I would never give up music in my life.
The woman in this picture is my favorite writer Echo and the man is her husband Jose. She had a legendary but miserable life. She traveled to many countries around the world and wrote down the stories she had met in her trip. Except for my mother and my future wife, she is the woman that I love most in this world. Although she suicide in 1991 even before I was born, but for me she never passed away.
Movies can teach me a lot of things about how to view this world, how to get along with people and how to face the dilemma in my life. Also, watching movie is a good way to entertain. Pulp fiction is one of the movies that love best.
Perhaps because of Echo, I also love to travel and experience new things. I feel like I am finishing the trip that Echo didn’t have chance to finish it. My friend took this picture when we were in New York.
I love nature, I love the ocean and the creatures in it. Every time I go to a city, the first place I would like to visit is the local aquarium. Although they are almost the same in every where, I still enjoy the time when I am watching those beautiful creatures. They make me feel serene and satisfied.
Of course, I love Chinese food. I always go to the Chinese restaurant when I am homesick. In China, cooking is also a kind of art.
The last one is the wallpaper of my cell phone. It is a picture of the sky at night. I am not sure this is a photo or a drawing but I’m pretty sure it is one of the most attractive and impressive pictures I’ve ever seen.
